Idea of Progress 9

Exploring the ISS Today we listened to a document about the International Space Station. There was a girl who spoke about a hole, she could jump in it. Maybe there was no gravity where they were. she also spoke with a man, and she always joked in the video. She said that it was funny, and she talked about Superman too. In the module called the PMM, she said there was extra food, and extra clothes, and also things they needed. to say [ei] hey / says [e] ten / said [e] ten   Warm Up AKA [eikei ei] Back From The Future 2015  -> twenty fifteen to hover

The Expedition To Go On Mars, or The Man Who Wanted To Escape From Earth   The text deals with ( or, is about, or, tells the story of... ) a man whose name is Pritchard, and who wants to go on Mars. He wants to go on the rocket because of a future atomic war. But the policemen don't want him to go : previous expeditions failed, maybe the men are dead? He asked: "what do I have to do?" He's scared, and he prefers going on Mars even if it's dangerous. In the end they catch him and put him in jail. to leave someone alone = laisser qqun tranquille to fail = échouer whose name is... =  "dont le nom est" Warm up to begin with to build built built Clément Ader build in 1896 in Tournan en Brie Icarus

Idea of Progress 7

A  Message For The University Of Arizona Today, we tried to write a suggestion for the MRO to take a picture of one of the places we have chosen: Hello, we are students in a university in France. We study planet Mars with our Science teacher. We are very interested in the topic. We observed four big scale pictures, and we chose this one. It features a flat terrain, that's why we chose it. We would like to know if there's water traces in the rivulets we could detect. It would be a good place to take a high definition photograph of, for a future robotic or manned mission Warm Up Pasteur institute an epidemic Animal testing a cure AIDS

Idea Of Progress 6

Launching the Mro  Today we watched another document about the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. We understood that the satellite couldn't respond immediately ; it had a 12 minute delay. there were a lot of engineers and scientists to design this. They came from all over the world (the H1B helps, this is the genius visa).  We also noticed that the MRO had to burn a booster to slow down and be attracted by the gravitation of Mars. It then takes 6 months for the satellite to stabilize its orbit. Warm Up Georges Méliès special fx  CGI (Abyss) 1896 he / she / it

A Photocopy Machine for Mars The MRO is a satellite. MRO stands for (=means  / signifie ) Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. It works like a photocopy machine, or a scanner. It's a camera that's been orbiting Mars for 10 years. The camera is called the HiRise ; it's a high definition camera, and it captures everything, line by line, like a photocopy machine. It's a perfect representation. It is one of these robotic mission that prepare the future manned missions ( missions habitées ) on Mars. It takes the most stunning (=amazing, beautiful) images. Warm-Up To begin with a physicist / a physician a subject / a topic to intimidate / to threaten / to be a deterrent MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction)

Idea of Progress 3

Today we analyzed the text more thoroughly. Last time's sentences: - Dr Schultze-Maukuch wants to establish a camp, and to send 2 men and 2 women to settle (coloniser) on Mars. Right : "I suppose 2 men and 2 women would be good." - A one-way journey is the most economical way to go. right : "It is the most economical way." - They want to bring agriculture kits, to see if it could be  harvested on Mars. Right : "...and agricultural kits." - the writer is Irene Klotz, it dates from 2010. Right. It was published on Discovery News. - They'll take 2 year's worth of supplies Right : "stocked with 2 year's worth of food." - They said the right age to go was 50 or 60. Right: "50 or 60 would be the right age to go." - The air on Mars is toxic. Wrong: it's not in the text. However, the atmosphere is not thick (épaisse) enough to protect against solar radiation. - Before sett...

The First Men Who Will Go On Mars - Dr Schultze-Maukuch wants to establish a camp, and to send 2 men and 2 women to settle (coloniser) on Mars. - A one-way journey is the most economical way to go. - They want to bring agriculture kits, to see if it could be harvested on Mars. - the writer is Irene Klotz, it dates from 2010. - They'll take 2 year's worth of supplies - They said the right age to go was 50 or 60. - The air on Mars is toxic. - Before settlers, they want to send robots. - Going on Mars is like a suicide mission. - Robotics will help the mission. to bring, brought, brought - apporter to harvest - moissonner to date back from x - dater de  a settler - un colon To send/sent/sent - envoyer one-way journey - un voyage à sens unique / un aller simple eventually - finalement to carry out - réaliser, mener à bien one week’s worth of - une semaine de a tool - un outil gender - genre supplies - provisions a settler...

A Representation of the Future Today we studied a picture together. At first glance ( au premier regard ), we could see a big house, it seemed to be inspired by American tastes ( goûts ) and architecture. Then we noticed there could be a dome around the place, and the background was red and rocky. We eventually ( finalement ) discovered that it was a representation of the future of humanity on Mars. Maybe it was taken from a sci-fi movie. This is what could happen to mankind if the earth came to an end ( venait à disparaître ). humanity=mankind [mankaind] sci-fi [sai fai] rocky ( rocailleux )
