The Teacher Came Up With That Title Theory n°1 : Alexander Selkirk was a Scottish sailor who worked as a naval officer on a boat. He was marooned ( abandoned ) on an island. He was a major inspiration for RC. Theory 2 :  Philosopher and court official Ibn Tufail wrote a philosophical Arabic (stress on the first syllable) novel about a child abandoned on an island... This little child is raised by feral (wild) animals, and we learn he is an experiment to see what isolation could do on a human being. Some scholars ( experts ) argue ( try to prove ) that this was a pivotal influence on Defoe. Theory 3 :  Captain Robert Knox (pas de déterminant avant Captain) stayed on an island for 18 years after a storm had hit his boat. He was with his crew... It apparently directly influenced the story of RC. The island is currently Sri Lanka (Ceylon). This event was published in 1681. The Frontispiece   Today we studied the first few pages of Robinson Crusoe. We noticed there was an engraving ( une gravure, une eau-forte) describing the hero. In the background, we could see a boat that was sinking ( to sink, couler ). The title indicates that this book about Robinson Crusoe is "written by himself," we can conclude it's an autobiography. It's also the third edition. If the book went through many editions, that could mean it was popular / successful. Finally, R.C. is depicted (= described ) with his weapons again (two guns and a sword).  the epitome of = the incarnation of to be aimed at V-ing / something = to be made for... to be teeming with = to be full of This book was probably aimed at ordinary people with ordinary lives, because it was teeming with adventure. Myths & Heroes 1

The Myth Of Robinson Crusoe Today we studied a picture together. At first we noticed a palm tree ( un palmier ) ; if there was a palm tree, the scene would probably take place on a tropical island. And if there was a tropical island and the topic was myths & heroes, then it could be about Robinson Crusoe. After that, we could see a man with a gun and a sword. He had strange, self-made clothes on. He could be hunting ; he also looked like a settler. Finally, we understood he had another man under his foot. If it was about Robinson Crusoe, it might be Friday. There were dead bodies in the background too. If there were corpses, then maybe Robinson was the murderer. To put it bluntly, it seemed racist and insensitive. We can wonder to what extent is Robinson Crusoe a hero and a myth... a rifle rags a settler a corpse / a body to put it bluntly sensitive / sensible to what extent... 1.
