Worksongs 5 : The Slaves in 12 Years A Slave

The Slaves in 12 Years A Slave Lea has heard strange sounds. Maybe it's inside a park, because I heard something with rocks. I heard slaves in a plantation, cutting plants with knives. The Master told them what they wanted to do. the slaves sing something about "my lord." This video is taken from a movie called 12 Years a Slave . Slaves come, and sing about their fathers and mothers "Ma," and "Pa." It's because their parents were dead. We could see a white man giving orders to the "fresh" slaves. Worksongs 4: a musical signal

Today we share what we understood about the text. Camille said it was about a secret code. We corrected the exercises together. Then we tried to understand what the text was about: For activists like Harriet Tubman, Go Down Moses was a signal. Her job was to free (libérer) the slaves. When she helped them, she used songs to communicate. Go Down Moses was a signal to warn that there was danger.

Worksongs 3 : A Secret Code

Image
Today we recapped what we learnt so far: 1. Go Down Moses is a religious song that deals with the sufferings of the Hebrews in Egypt, and their liberation by the prophet Moses. 2. this Gospel song has another meaning: African-Americans were slaves like the Jews, and they compared their situation with the story in the Bible. 3. There is a third meaning, a secret code in the song.  We studied a text about this secret code, and we had questions about it. Next time we'll share our answers. homework: finish answering your questions! Correction: We (consider) moving South. -> we are considering moving South. Chris (come) tomorrow. ->Is Chris coming tomorrow. Slaves compose Gospel songs -> Gospel songs are composed by slaves. (Are Gospel songs composed by slaves?) (Gospel songs are being composed by slaves.) People love music. ->  Music is loved by people. (Is music loved by people?)

Worksongs 2 :

Today we studied an excerpt / extract from the Book of Exodus, in the Bible. Here's what we noticed / remarked: "Let my people go" "The Lord saith / said to Moses, Pharaoh refuses to let the people go." The Lord is the God of the Hebrews. It deals with the Egyptians. It was not written 2005. It's the modern English version that was published in 2005. This text is about the history of the Jews in Egypt, when they were enslaved by Pharaoh. There are connections between this text from the Bible and the Gospel song: "Lord," "Moses," "Let my people go..." And Hebrews were slave in a strange land, just like African-Americans.

Worksongs 1 - lyrics of a gospel song

lyrics of a gospel song Today we started studying a document together. It was a music sheet (or, a music score). We could see the lyrics of the song. It was called Go Down Moses . Manon said it probably was a song for a lot of people to sing. We understood it could be a Gospel song. On the music sheet, we could read " negro spriritual, " but we don't know what it means.
