Ruins Of Detroit
Ruins Of Detroit Today we started a new sequence about the city of Detroit. We studied a few pictures that showed derelict (abandoned) classrooms. At first, we thought that it was an art room used in the cinema industry (and when you are creative, it gets messy) ; but then we understood it was really a high school that had collapsed (was destroyed) because of poverty. Images from the 80s had been juxtaposed onto the more recent ones, showing how nice and clean that place used to be. Detroit used to be a very opulent (wealthy, rich) city. It had its heydays in the 1950s, with the rise of the automobile industry. But jobs started disappearing with the crises of the 1960s and the 1970s. The richest people flew (escaped) first, and moved in the suburbs (around the city). The poorest had to stay downtown (in the middle of the city).
