Presentation : Luddites

 Today we started working on the Luddites. The first document was a painting depicting a group of people, an angry crowd (une foule en colère). There was a gigantic figure right in the middle ; it could be their king, or their leader. In the background, we could notice mountains. A building was on fire in the bottom right-hand corner. The costumes led us to believe the picture dated back from the 18th or 19th century.

 Another document illustrated what the Luddites were about : another group of angry rioters (émeutiers, a riot = une émeute, to riot = se révolter) could be seen attacking a machine. We suggested that they might be rioting because they thought these machines were stealing their jobs, so they defended themselves by destroying them.

 In the end, an engraving (une gravure) from a book compared Luddites with rats, as if they were pests (des nuisibles).

The Myth Of Robinson Crusoe Today we studied a picture together. At first we noticed a palm tree ( un palmier ) ; if there was a palm tree, the scene would probably take place on a tropical island. And if there was a tropical island and the topic was myths & heroes, then it could be about Robinson Crusoe. After that, we could see a man with a gun and a sword. He had strange, self-made clothes on. He could be hunting ; he also looked like a settler. Finally, we understood he had another man under his foot. If it was about Robinson Crusoe, it might be Friday. There were dead bodies in the background too. If there were corpses, then maybe Robinson was the murderer. To put it bluntly, it seemed racist and insensitive. We can wonder to what extent is Robinson Crusoe a hero and a myth... a rifle rags a settler a corpse / a body to put it bluntly sensitive / sensible to what extent... 1. Idea of Progress 2

Idea Of Progress 6

Launching the Mro  Today we watched another document about the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. We understood that the satellite couldn't respond immediately ; it had a 12 minute delay. there were a lot of engineers and scientists to design this. They came from all over the world (the H1B helps, this is the genius visa).  We also noticed that the MRO had to burn a booster to slow down and be attracted by the gravitation of Mars.
